Minecraft Story Mode sucks

Monday, October 26, 2015

Do yourself a favor, if you`re thinking about spending six of your precious dollars on this game, don`t. Take your money go find a homeless person and give him your money and get him to tell you a story. The hobo's ranting and ravings will bring you more pleasure than this game ever could. Not only will the transient's tale probably last longer than the mere two and half hours it takes to finish the first episode of the Tell Tale game and not only will you be doing a good deed thus aquiring calmness to your soul but it will be a more enjoyable process than playing this game.

I'm bitter and i have a right to be. We've been waiting 5 years for Minecraft to finally release something that resembles any sort of an ultimate purpose to sinking our lives into Minecraft days at a time. Instead we get nothing more than reading conversation trees and quick time events. This would be the equivalent of asking your parents for He-Man's Castle Gray Skull for christmas only to find an abomination built out of duct tape and pencils by your weird single uncle under the the tree on Christmas day.

I guess I could be to blame here since the tagline of the game is "a choose your own adventure based in the world of Minecraft." It was wishful thinking to hope it would be anything more fun than those shitty schoolastic books from 30 years ago.

The buzz on this game is that it's actually aimed at a younger audience which terrifies me. Somewhere out there are kids building castles and putting their bed exactly enough blocks out of the corner for it to have the proper fung shui and they're thinking to themselves "if only this game got rid of all the building aspects and made me read for a couple hours straight."

You don't have to pay money to play Hearthstone

Thursday, February 20, 2014

...but you should pay money to play Hearthstone.

Hearthstone is a deck building online multiplayer game staring the characters from World of Warcraft. Each deck contains a hero and 30 cards that you pick from an available pool. Each hero has a class warrior, rogue, preist etc. These classes all have their own cards that include spells and effects on your gameplay and some even have exclusive minions. This gives you a lot of variables to take into concern when building your deck as well as upping the learning curve.

If you read learning curve and just had that mini gamer panic attack we all do when we realize we're getting in pretty deep pretty fast don't worry there is a cornucopia of websites and forum posts dedicated to the minutia of deck building and which cards will help which hero the most. Of course I have looked at these sites exactly no times at all because who wants to do research to play a game. I'll just fail constantly for a while and have irreparable stats as my legacy. After playing for hours and hours it is pretty obvious what type of deck i will be building. My most succesful deck uses the age old strategy of online multiplayer gaming, the cheaper and more obnoxious you play the better you will do.

In fact I built a deck with the only motivation of causing whoever played to me to suffer an anger stroke at just how obnoxiously my cards played out. If your interested, this is my Paladin build. If you don't care or haven't played the game yet skip this part it will just annoy you (mission accomplished).

blessing of might x2 (paladin card)
hand of protection x2 (paladin card)
Humility (paladin card)
redemption (paladin card) (white gem)
shieldbearer (white gem)
holy light (paladin card)
ironfur grizzly x2
raid leader
silverback patriarch x2
truesilver champion (paladin card)
blessing of kings x2 (paladin card)
consecration (paladin card)
hammer of wrath (paladin card)
sen'jin shieldmasta x2
abomination (blue gem)
booty bay bodyguard
darkscale healer
frostwolf warlord
lord of the arena x2
reckless rocketeer
sunwalker (blue gem)
guardian of kings (paladin card)
stormwind champion

The stars indicate rarity of the cards. Don't fret I got these all pretty quickly in the game. there are 5 levels or rarity for cards: basic (no gem), common (white gem), rare (blue gem), Epic (purple gem), legendary (orange gem). It's pretty easy to build competent decks with all basic cards if you want to be a purist since they are all unlocked just by leveling the different heroes up to 10.

Whether they be physical or digital there are a veritable shit tonne of deck building games out there so why should you choose the newest version of Yugi-oh? Well because this is the only deck building game made by blizzard and even though i'm not a honk i do admit that when they finally make a game once every couple of years that game ends up being pretty sweet and literally an amazing amount of fun to play. Hearthstone isn't even done yet, It's still in beta! It's already well polished but it's a fair bet Blizzard is still working away on their genius machines in addiction headquarters making this game better and better every day. The game is free there is nothing to loose so you should play for realz bro.

Yes it is a free to play game. Yes there are in game purchases available and I have heard the lamentations of gamers out there. "I would try Hearthstone but I don't want to pay money to be able to match the other players." I don't want to sound like a Blizzard PR rep but these worries are wrong and you should give blizzard your money anyway. We've all played WOW and we've all payed money to play WOW and we all felt like we got adequate returns on our investment. Unless you didn't play WOW and somehow are reading a video game blog post about a game that is a spinoff of WOW in which case you should go play WOW. Just enough for it to ruin your life and keep you from judging the rest of us who have already been there.

Lets get back to the super interesting financial part. Hearthstone rewards you with packs of cards that you buy for in game gold. 100 gold gets you one pack. You get gold by completing quests or racking up wins streaks in multiplayer. Each pack of cards contains 5 individual cards with at least one being a rare or better. So you can get even the rarest cards in the game by chance and all you have to do is play enough to get a little bit of gold which really doesn't take that long.

Real life actual money comes into the equation because you can buy the packs of cards in various bundles at different prices. They start at $1.50 and the bigger the bundle the more you save. Basically like the vast majority of free to play games you pay money just to save time but since the time investment in hearthstone before you see rewards is minimal it's not really that important. You might get a slight edge by being able to get cards faster than using in game money but it is still up to chance and ironically enough I've gotten a fat goose egg by going this route. Yes that is right I paid $10 to get seven packs of cards and I got basically nothing. All my strongest cards came out of packs that I bought with gold. I'm not urging you to pay real life dollar bills on this method of getting cards instead I urge you to pay to play in the arena.

The arena costs $2 to enter or 150 gold and your deck is random. You start off by picking a random hero class and then the cards come up three at a time and you pick your favorite. The bad effect of the randomness is how hard it is to build a deck that synergizes very well within itself. On the other hand the best part of arena is all the cards are potentially available to your deck so you might get to have a taste of the most powerful cards in the game.

In the arena the more wins you rack up in your three lives the more glorious loot you get. Your drops are varying amounts of gold arcane dust and best of all just for entering you get a pack of cards.

What makes the arena the best play mode in the game is the old school arcade multiplayer feel to it. It's not unlike when you used to walk up to Street Fighter II cabinet in an arcade, drop in a quarter and start working over the computer as dhalsim because you feel quirky today and even though Ken is the best fighter in the game when you want to rack up some victories, you woke up with a case of the fuck arounds and dhalsim's arms stretch pretty effin long and the first time you went to yoga and your arms didn't stretch you got totally bummed out. That's why you should play arena mode on hearthstone because the people who designed the characters in Street Fighter II, although colorful and inventive as they might be, are fucking liars. Did you know that the three skulls around Dhalsim's neck are the remains of children from his village in inda that died during a plague. Now how the fuck do you step against a dude who has kid skulls around his neck?

The super mega ultimate exciting world of micro transaction funded gaming. yay._.

Monday, September 9, 2013

Lets face it the topic "micro-transaction funded gaming" sounds ridiculously boring. Like micro versus macro economics boring. Like how are we actually talking about video games boring. My eyes are glassed over boring. To circumvent the dull-drums, the industry calls it "free to play gaming". Wait i fucking love free, In fact that's my favorite price point.

Free to play mobile games are self explanatory in that you download the game to your desired device and start playing at no cost. The payment is to enrich your experience using an in game currency to buy little things in the game hence a micro transaction. The free to play games can be divided into two categories which are time and content.

The Time category gets your real life dollars by offering you the option of saving you time. These games often require you to build something or other and then you wait for that something to be built or stocked or grown or whatever time consuming method of acquiring an object the game has.

I'm going to use Tiny Tower as an example to conveniently bring up the factoid of it being the first mobile free to play game i played. TT has you construct floors in an apartment building. You gain points by building different business that are essentially a floor in your tower. You also have to make residence floors so you have customers to shop in your sky scraper. The more floors you build the longer you have to wait, in real time no less. This is where the in game currency comes in. You can get rid of the wait time of the floors being constructed.

Instead of closing the game and doing something productive you can get rid of the wait time so you can continue being active in the game while you finish your business call. Business call is code for pooping. I made the term up a few years ago while i was a shift leader at Blockbuster video. "You guys hold the fort i gotta make a business call." See it sounds much more classy than admitting you're going to go into the dank staff washroom to play tiny towers while you dump.

The game that has been occupying my time on the throne lately is Friendly Fire. You need to know about this game because redrobot finally perfected free to play. I say the game is perfect because you can play the full game for free just like Tiny tower the only thing you pay real money for is to skip wait times.

In FF you build an army base and over time you can upgrade your base, defenses and battle units. Your base operates in the same manner as a Real Time Strategy game. You mine for oil and metal to build the tanks and planes you need to attack other players bases. The unique twist is the fact that you pick where your base is set up by putting in your address. The game then uses the street layout in the area of your neighborhood as the layout for your base. This gives the game a nice personalized feel.

Of course the game is just a mobile experience so you can't expect an entirely indepth RTS experience. The game is simplified and streamlined. Instead of having full unit control you pick a drop off point for your tanks around the enemy base. Then your forces roll into the enemy base on auto pilot and wreak havok all the while you can drop bombs via airstrike with pin point accuracy. When you defeat an enemies base you take some of their dog tags but if you loose they take yours. There are leader boards for the world all the way down to your city. Another unique feature is when you are attacked by another player you can get revenge on them and you awarded bonus dog tags for your effort but then they can do the same to you. The more you attack each other the bigger the bonus.

Now that i've talked about two good games I'll tell you how free to play games can be terrible?

Content games make you feel like you are missing a part of the game that you can only experience if you buy additional content. This is either new areas of play, equipment for your characters or the game can be so dick headed that they even want you to buy characters so you aren't outmatched by your enemies. These extremely frustrating because they ramp up the difficulty in a ham fisted attempt to coax you into making a purchase.

Blood brothers is a good example of this type of game. I rage quit that and then ended up playing multiple variations of the same formula. The formula is a team building battler. You get a starting team of a varying number of monsters. You can get more monsters by amassing in game points and then draw random monsters from an in game mechanic.

Problem is you never really get anything good without paying real money. Blood Brothers even limits the highest level of monsters to such rediculously high levels of in game currency you're basically left with no other option than to pay high amounts of money for a chance to draw for a powerful monster... Which means even if you do part with your hard earned money you can still get stuck with a shitty mage who has no real influence on your battles and you will end up getting ripped apart in all the PVP fights.

Eventually the frustration will be too much and you'll get sick of these games... all of them. Thanks but no thanks Blood brothers, Hell Fire, what ever that marvel game was called, that shitty transformers game and even Puzzle and Dragons. Yes Puzzle and Dragons is the top of the heap for these games but it's just a shitty stink heap anyway.

I live tweeted Final Fantasy XIII-2

Wednesday, September 4, 2013

I'm starting final fantasy XIII-2 Pretty slick opening video with some ambient music and a guy carrying a girl into water

shits going down in the opening fmv. Oh damn that's a big spell raining down on enemies. Why is the theme from love boat playing

I only played about an hour into the story of Final fantasy 13 so i hope this one makes sense

Oh great now that i started the game it's the same video with awesome narration "engage in battle and rejoice"

Ugg cinematic button que events are THE WORST they always seem so hamfisted into the gameplay. The battle tutorial is nice though

"Cinematic action. Press x repeatedly" how bout you go fuck yourself and get on with the fight

The bad guy caius is awesome. This game better pull the switch over where he becomes a playable character

Just got 5stars on the first battle. SUCK IT GAME. So if my name's lightnig and i'm in valhalla and i shoot bolts am i a sexy zeus?

Aaaand it doesn't matter because lightning is dead and now i'm controlling her sister serah

Noel has to find serah to change the future which doesn't make sense, lightning is dead in the present so won't she still be dead

This game's story better not get too complex because i'm drinking beers while playing and i'm already lost

Oh nice you get to pick how you control the camera that's big points

Oh if you haven't played ffxiii you can read the datalogue in the menu to catch up. Or not read and screw it i'll take option b

Wtf there's a jump button? I better not have to do any effin parkour while the buildings around me and underfoot crumble

"One more thing, don't ever lay down AND WAIT TO DIE" I fucking love cheesy final fantasy dialogue so much

nice there's a battle element called paradigm shift. You can focus on attacking one enemy with your party each memebr can take one

When your party attacks one enemy you get a chain and enough chains lowers the enemies defence. Shit just got real

Sweet there's a bestiary i can't wait to fight tonnes of enemies and fill it up and then nerd the fuck out

THERE'S DIFFERENT OUTFITS I CAN UNLOCK HELLS YES. i can't wait to get the whatever weird japanese emo one there is.

So your weapon is actually a moogle and when you're done a battle you cuddle it. Perfect victory celebration

I'm wandering around in the night screwing around and there's blaring up tempo viola jazz music wtf.

I'm not sure if it's just weird japanese mannerisms but i think the big tough guy character in the game just had a hissy fit

Great i'm barely an hour in and already i don't know how to get to the next area of the map... stupid jump mechanic

This fucking terrible music isn't helping the frustration any

Using the paradigm shift repeatedly mid battle to go from a defensive formation to offensive is interesting but incredibly tedious

Noel's voice over sounds like an over articulated tom cruise

The music is great again sultry saxaphoneis just what I want in an RPG I just never knew it untill now

This game is gender confusion to the max. The guys look like girls and the girls look like 12 year old boys

I think playing this before XIII might spoil the plot of XIII

These conversation trees are just filing me with anxiety. What if I choose the wrong one and don't get a giant sword

I think life would be a lot more hilarious if we all adopted FFXIII-2 body language

Come on it's been over two hours where's my new outfit

The most impressive advancement is the design of the chocobos

And they sqwak like a peacock when you jump. That'll be 20 minutes of added gameplay

Now the dogs in my house are going apeshit because they think there is a peacock outside. Make that 40mins of extra gametime.

That's two cut scenes while I wait to leave the starting area RAAAAAAGE

There's a character named godot and his voice over sounds like a petulant Bruce Campbell AND HE'S NOT A PLAYABLE CHARACTER WTF

Sweet there's a new time travelling element where the more places you go the more places open up so i can literally get lost FOREVER

Turns out you can change which character you have as party leader in battle and exploration. Sorry girl with a bow and arrow I would rahter be the dude with two swords. Have fun questioning the meaning of EVERYTHING while I just smash it all

ARE YOU SERIOUS I CAN ADD MONSTERS TO MY PARTY?! THEY FIGHT FOR ME?! best thing EVAR

The monsters have a special ability that you can use once their battle bar builds up TOTALLY AWESOME the first monster i'm using is a cat and it's special ability does a tenth of the damage as a regular attack NOT COMPLETELY AWESOME

other than the one song i was complaining about earlier the sound track is totes rad. Except when you talk to characters in the game the music stays the same volume, which is off puting

Oh nice my cat monster, which looks like a cross between a grey alien and a mogwai, heals me which makes up for his completely wussyness

Oh nice i found a traveling merchant... who is dressed up in a super sluty chocobo outfit... it's weirdly very sexy... don't tell my mom

Holy crap you can infuse one monster with the skills of another by combining them. This game is going DEEEEEEEEEEP

How is this game still throwing new elements at me. Now i'm stuck inside the temporal paradox and i must solve a dissapearing floor puzzle *gilz*

So far I've gotten two battle achievements and both had vague descriptions. "defeated an army's worth of enemies" How many is that? "fought a significant amount of battles without using retry" Sweet what's the numerical equivalent of significant. I think i just wrote a rap lyric

The best feature of this game so far is the fact that if you don't want to fight a random encounter you can just run past the enemy and skip it

All the characters in this game look like gelflings from the dark crystal

Oh man two gates to choose from do i go for the one out in the open or the one off the main path. Which one will have better loot? For the record i could not read a choose your own adventure book without cheating. THIS IS KILLING ME

So i jump 295 years into the future and the loading screen is only half of thay HEY OOO

I'm in the woods fighting a giant tomato monster

I feel like this is one of those bosses i'm supposed to loose to since i've been fighting him for ten minutes and have only gotten him down about a sixth of his life bar he keeps healing himself and my cat monster keeps healing me. Lets do this i got allllllll night

Thank god for autobattle. Spamming 'a' button

(ten minutes later) I've got a quarter of his life bar down

(22 minutes into fight) Just over half way. If he has an epic attack at low health i'm effed

(26 minutes into fight) Tomatoe monster is down to a quarter health

I died... eff sakes i think i should have levelled up a bit more haha

If i get stuck fighting this bad guy a half hour each time just to repeatedly fail that'll be a game breaker

I levelled up my crystal skill tree thinger so maybe i can beat him this timI levelled up my crystal skill tree thinger so maybe i xan beat him this time

This is that effin tomatoe monster i'm fighting his or her name is royal ripeness which is kinda funny

I BEAT IT... but then i screwed up the button prompts because i was trying to take a picture

Look who brought his big dumb face to help fight the tomatoe. A toqueless snow

Well that wraps up the first six hpurs of my gameplay i should be done most of the tutorials by now right?... RIGHT?!

Ok i looked it up and in the american military a platoon is 26-64 which what i am guessing it would be since i got the achievement pretty early

Ok i found an achievement description it actually is 100 enemies. And the achievements that say a significant amount of ________ is 50 fiddy

I like loot

Friday, August 9, 2013

When I play an RPG my priorties are in descending order are: loot, fighting mechanics, character skills, level design, graphics and last and most certainly least, story.

Don't get me wrong I love a good story but I'm going to be honest I don't pay attention to said story. Really I only talk to NPCs so they can give me clues on where to find the treasure or who to shoot to get treasure. Sometimes they tell me how to advance the story but this is only an indirect tactic that leads me to more booty.

The reason I listed fighting mechanics as my number two priority is the game should be fun to play. After all getting my precious loot shouldn't be a chore... although if the price is right i will probably put up with some terrible mechanics just to get more shiny baubles. This would be the only reason I briefly put up with Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom. Really the only reason any of you would have played that game is it was one of the first Action RPGs for the xbox 360 and when it came out we were starved for anything in that genre.

The terrible combat basically came down to awkward button layout which meant you had to stand still to fire your ranged weapon. Which is fine if you have a powerful enough weapon that obliterates enemies before they get a chance to reach you. If however you are employing my go to shoot while running backwards away from the bad-guy-you-were-supposed-to-level-up-a-bunch-more-instead-of-fighting-and-dying-repeatedly then this "stop and pop" style of shooting breaks your brain with rage.

If this nearly 6 year old game is so terrible why am i talking about it you might ask? Well loot, that's why. KUF: Circle of Doom had one unmistakably amazing thing about it: you could combine your weapons with each other in a form of alchemy to make new weapons. Basically grab a shit ton of crap weapons and you might make one good weapon. Really it combined my two favorite things about loot new shiny stuff and cleaning out my inventory of the old not so shiny anymore stuff.

There's two types of loot whores. 1. Hoarders who compulsively collect all the loot they can and then try to store as much of it as they can for what ever reason. 2. Destroyers who collect loot take what they want and get rid of the rest. I am a destroyer I collect everything, EVERYTHING but i sell anything I don't need so that I can buy stuff I do need. When my inventory is full and there is still stuff to collect i purge my inventory of the least valuable items and then pick up the stuff that is worth more. The best game that is currently tickling my treasure needing nubs is Borderlands 2.

Some of you might try to say that diablo 3 is better for loot than Borderlands 2 and you are wrong. Blizzard uses the tactic of a carrot on a really long stick but their stick is much to long and labor intensive. You can get a lot of good items but it takes forever and you have to beat hordes of epic bad guys to charge up your loot drop meter and then fight bosses on the games hardest difficulty in the hope that you won't have to play through the entire game again just to try find a new sword or piece of clothing. Once you get your new trinket it probably will look stupid so you want to do the whole process over again. Can't have your guy looking like a mish mash now can we.

Borderlands 2 doesn't have swords or clothing drops, it has guns, a fuck ton of guns. So many guns that you can't even open a port a potty without four of those beauties showering down on your face and neck area. The game goes to such an extent to ensure your happiness and is so nice to you it even lets you check all the stats of the loot before you pick it up. 2K and gearbox are such kind game developers they don't even want you to bother filling up your item slots with trash. It's like their carrot is on such a short stick that you can smell it and rub it on your lips before you decide if you want to chase it. You see Blizzard, that is how a gentleman pilfers.

I choose you xbox one

Saturday, June 22, 2013

Well it's that time again. Where fan boys and girls pick which of the big two systems they are going to not shut up about for the next six months.

Sometimes it seems like the quicker out of the gate your choice is made the more virulent you preachings will be as is the case with microsoft haters.

I call them haters because a lot of people made their choice in the never ending console war not because they favored one system but instead they decided who had their allegance by who they disliked less.

Sure the xbox one's "always connected" was a disasterous idea and even a common simpleton had to know it would be redacted. It has been redacted almostnimmediately after the xbox one's anouncement. Yes nerds your river of tears at e3 lubricated the decision your cries were heard and now you only have to log on to the internet once a day.

You know what the internet is right? That thing you've had the other end of your umbilical cord hooked up to for the past five years? The thing that only a terrorist would dare ask you to be forced to be in contact with. Those fucking monsters. They did fix it right so are we going to call xbox and say we're sorry?

You're still going to buy a playstation aren't you.

I don't want to pretend to be better than the internet policy alarmists because when it boils down to it i am a xbox fanboy. Have been since i fought the flood in the library of the original Halo and guess what i most likely always will be. In kind, right out of the gate i'm against the ps4.

I hate the dual shock controllers and have never understood how anyone's hands could possible hold those in any semblance of comfort. Sure they are a  servicible cintroller and could be worse. They could be made of barb wire.

Xbox has always had more comfortable ergonomic controllers. Even the first xbox giant controllers were at home in my hands. I like em big. I rest my hands in my lap so the weight of a turgid interface has never been a factor for me. You can talk up and down about games and performance and connectivity issues but if i don't like the controller my whole experience will be tainted by the figurative thorn in my paw.

Since i brought up games lets talk about platform exclusive titles. Actually lets talk about one game. My most anticipated next experience.

Dead rising is my favorite ongoing series. Better than halo, gta, uncharted, god of war, assasins creed, gran turismo, call of duty, battlefield and every other current cannon i haven't mentioned.

At this point i really shouldn't have to explain dead rising to you. If you haven't played it before it is a openworld hack and slash time sensitive action rpg made by Capcom.

The first game was set in a mall. The second installment was based in a vegas-like casino village. Dead rising 3 is set in an entire city that is probably L.A.-ish. Although the thought of trying to memorize an entire city is pretty intimidating the zombie massacre that awaits with a plethora of weapons makes it more than worth the hassle.

There are new combo weapons including A HAND GRENADE SLEDGEHAMMER.

How would that work you ask? Well it's simple you find an in game work bench and if you have a sledgehammer and hand grenades in your inventory YOU TAPE THE GRENADES TO THE SLEDGEHAMMER.

Is anyone else hard right now?

Really that's the reason i am going to buy an xbox one for a hundred extra dollars over the ps4. An exploding hammer. It's unrealistic, cheesy, immature and guaranteed fun as fuck.

When i play games i don't want realistic and evolved. I want rediculous over the top. I have no problem admitting i'm the lowest common denominator.

I want to feel like a little boy smashing dinky cars with a baseball bat. I will settle for smashing zombies with a grenade hammer.

secret of the magic crystal

Written in July 2012 (I forgot to publish this one)
Mike messaged me on twitter yesterday. @_Rades: @superdalebot Do you have Steam? (PC game thing, you buy/DL games through it) Go get it b/c I am going to gift you this bit.ly/a36k9C Free game? "alright I'll bite what's this about anyway" So i click on the link and i immediately know this is going to be one of the best presents I have ever received. You can grow and care for a UNICORN and then race it and run through obstacle courses to level up your unicorn. YOU CAN LEVEL UP YOUR UNICORN. We all know the only thing more totally awesome than a unicorn is that same unicorn but stronger, faster, my dexterous and full of even more spirit. I mean come on at this point it's taking everything i have to not just start fist pumping with one hand and slap my keyboard with the other while i make screaming chimpanzee noises. Once my unicorn fueled tumescence has finally subsided I decide to view the different options offered on the farm. Different buildings allow for different services.
At the blacksmith you can make magic horseshoes by using the anvil. You do this by picking three elements to combine and the smithing process is you hitting the arrow keys at the prompts either left right up or down (pretty much the same for all minigames). The ratings are boo, early, late, good and if you're lucky enough to be the unicorn whisperer like myself you get the occasional perfect.
Each new building is more magnificent than the last. My horse is tired from running through the forest jumping over logs and branches so i decided to check out the barn. Or should i say MAGICAL UNICORN HOSPITAL. "If your horse got ill, you would have to look for the stethoscope on the table to examine it." YES PLEASE. "You can cure it with an injection. If your horse is healthy, you might try to mix a magical potion by clicking on the mortar."
By now you can pretty much guess what all of the buildings contain. Either something you make by combining 3 different items or a way to train your magical steed to increase it's stats.
If you don't feel like doing anything productive you can actually just take your unicorn aside and brush it's mane or scrub it's feet... which can actually be quite addictive. You can even send your horse out to race and win money to buy better brushes and even a marble water trough.
As mind shattering as this game is initially there is a reason the price tag is so low and that is there's not much to the game. Once you do a couple of the training mini-games and build an item or two the game gets very repetitive. I actually only played the game a couple of times and that's why it took me so long to publish this post. I kept meaning on coming back to it and to play the game more thoroughly but then Diablo 3 came out, then Borderlands 2, then Call of Duty Black ops 2 and then i dabbled in Star Craft 2 and all the time my poor golden unicorn withered with neglect.

Back into wow... and it's broken

Monday, March 12, 2012

So Mike sent me a scroll of Resurrection for my WOW account. It's been roughly a year and a half since I turned my back on WOW and never went back.

Long enough for me to forget how frustrating of a time sap the game can be but also long enough to forget about all the fun that is to be had as well. I'm already addicted to screwing around in the auction house again and wasting all my money to level up my enchanting for no apparent reason other than something to do with the drops from dungeoning with PUGs.

Speaking of which it's a good thing all my action bars are the same as when I left them because I managed to tank a level 82 dungeoning pretty much by spamming my hot keys until it came back to me.

The reason I am mostly screwing around is I am waiting to reap the benefits of the ressurection scroll mike sent me.

I get a character boost to level 80 no prob I'll just pick one of my abandoned worgens to bequeath this on and then after that he'll get transferred to mikes server and I'll change him into a Horde and then maybe play a dungeon or two with mike no problem....

Except there is a problem. My level jump went through just fine the transfer didn't. I figured it might be because the game wasn't fully installed yet since I was doing the thing where you play while it installs. I open a ticket just incase that's not the actual cause. I'll just kill time with this character till it goes through.

I decided I would level up his skinning since it was still where i left it when he was a level 35 character. So I level up his skinning from 154 for 240 by pretty much committing monkey and panther genocide in strangle thorn. There were some gators in there too but no one really cares about them do they. Bonus is I can sell all those sweet leathers in the auction house and become a millionaire so i can buy the ugliest gear ever and transmogrification my high level gear to be really ugly. Bam all my stuff is in the auctionhouse and since I've been playing for most of the day I'll go outside and cure these WOW rickets I've been working on.

(next day)

Alright i actually talked to people IRL for a while and now to go reap the rewards of my bounty from being a leather peddler. Another problem now i can't even log on to good Old Tankerstein because it says a character update has been started and must finish.

Celebrations ensue because now I'm sure some one sweaty with glasses is making sure I don't have to suffer anymore before I can make my wolf into an Orc a decision solely based on the size of the shoulder pads he would get. I'll just go check on battle.net and see if i have to pick his race one the website.

There's been an update to the ticket... they're sorry it took so long to get to the ticket but decided the best thing to do is call the support line. I call the line and guess what It's broken and i should call back in a few minutes as they recorded message tells me because it might be fixed.

It wasn't.

It wasn't the next time I called... or the next.

Ok fuck it it's sunday I'll call tomorrow now I try out an Orc death knight so i can get an idea of the majesty my character will be shrouded with if he ever stops being broken and fulfills his destiny.

I should have known there would be more problems when i immediately got booted off the server once he Fetuid was created. Nope I just kept loggin in and slogging through the death knight area every time I got booted, which was many, on the bright side i get to shoot cannons and if I slog through I can play some Pug action as a death knight.

I fiiiiiiinally make it through the starting area and all it took was a few crashes and one weird error where I couldn't interact with NPCs because i was in a permanent glitched "in combat" state. Alright lets mount up and get the fuck out of the plague lands and finish the last quest that takes me into the wide world and finally out of the starting area.

Due west as they say on to a yellow question mark and freedom.

Problem I'm stopped dead on the road. Weird. It's like i'm running into a wall. try to go around it nope just like running along a straight wall. Back up maybe it's some sort of clipping problem that will fix itself.

Nope.

Alright this was the glitchy character maybe if i restart the game it will work.

Nope.

RAGE QUIT! right after I create another ticket and send it out. Comeone Blizzard I'm ripe for WOW i have a failing social life and i just want to play some mindless dungeons. Besides I already leveled up my enchanting to the highest level and wasted all my money.

Update: Today I woke up and decided to check on my tickets before I did anything usefull... yes I would say I'm now full into WOW. And now it's as if this whole thing has turned into a comedy of errors because Battle.net is down for repairs.

I'm dangerously close to becoming bitter.

live tweets from arkham city from December

Wednesday, December 28, 2011

This post was meant to be an ongoing thing where I would tweet about Arkham City while I played it over time. Problem is I played it a couple of times and then traded it in for Saints Row the third and forgot all about these tweets. Well here they are 3 months later.

how bout i live tweet #arkhamcity instead of playing #mw3 you say. why who am i to deny a request

just getting a feel for #arkhamcitybefore i go to work seems like a dirty one button assasin's creed at the beginning

got my batman suit after the intro. Shame I kinda liked kicking ass in a pinstripe suit#Arkhamcity

i can already tell the chunky cartoony characters on this unreal engine are going to annoy me#Arkhamcity

love the simplified controls of#Arkhamcity just mash x then if a guy gets lightning bolts mash y and repeat makes combat very smooth

downloading the add on pack to use catwoman #arkhamcity. Still wish they would let me use the pin stripe suit

in case you need a combo move cheat sheet for #arkhamcity it's x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x

since you've probably already heard aaaaaaaallll about #Arkhamcity i'll play as catwoman and tweet about that instead

so when you play as catwoman you replay the beggining as batman? #arkhamcity

damn twoface looks awesome #arkhamcity

ooooooh use detective mode to figure out who's shooting me #arkhamcity never played #arkamasylum

great another riddler question mark that i have absolutely no idea what to do with #arkhamcity

wait bane is a goodguy? won't this kind of ruin that movie coming out#arkhamcity

fell in lava... yeah apparently there wasn't enough death in #ArkhamCity so i had to dive down a chimney to get to some molten hot death

mr. hammer is easily the best bad guy in the game so far #ArkamCity

that's about 12 fails at this riddler test i'd say about 37 more before i rage quit #ArkhamCity

well it only took half a thousand tries but i finally shot my remote batarang down the broken airduct to hit the riddler button #ArkhamCity

awesome now all the bad guys have guns and i can't stop dying #arkhamcity

this game is in dire dire need of quick travel #arkhamcity or at least put me back out on the street after i complete a mission

this old dilapidated city in the sewers is totally awesome #ArkhamCity

MW3 fiiiinally

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

It's inevitable I write about Modern Warfare 3. I'm not saying this begrudgingly the Call of Duty franchise has become a stable in the Game industry. A flag pole every November that fans can look forward to. When Modern Warefare 1 came out it took the industry by storm and every FPS has been using the franchise as a ruler since. Whether you like it or hate it if your gamer your well aware of it's presence when it's on the horizon. That all said this is the fifth installment since the game got it's revitalizing injection and I've bought over iteration happily.

The reason this inevitable blog is so late is because I originally wanted to play the single player before i wrote any kind of review on the game. I didn't want to be the asshole who only talks about the multi-player of the game and thereby ignoring all those people who buy these FPS for the single player story.

Well I played the single player for about two hours and it's like all the other Call of Duty games, AWESOME. I've only played for what i hope is a fraction of the campaign but it doesn't take Nostradamus to know that your in for good story, good shootin and occasional chance to hop on a giant gun a rip shit up. Which is more than enough to keep my trigger finger satiated.

Back to the multi-player. There is nothing drastically new from the other iterations of the modern warfare series which is a good thing. Too often games get caught up in the "making stuff new" trend and they throwaway all the good parts you loved from the last installment. I'm sure Infinitward is well aware of this because they have supplied everything you love... they just give it to you a bit differently which is just enough feeling of that new and improved thing developers are obsessed with.

The biggest difference is the unlocking system for weapons. Instead of attachments being unlocked as you level up your character they are unlocked as you level up each gun seperately. This is was a wise choice on the developer's behalf because now each weapon has even further uniqueness with since they have only changed the attachment unlocks from weapon to weapon but even the order they are unlocked. Ie for an assault rifle you'll unlock a silencer and then an underbarrel mounted grenade launcher whereas the light machine guns will be a grip instead of the launcher.

Another big change is the killstreak rewards. There are now three different sets of said rewards. There's the assault type which is the old killstreak system you know and love. You simply set up your order go kill some chaps and make it rain explosions and all manner of great murder. What's new though are the two new additions, Support and Specialist.

These two new streak rewards are set up just like the Assault but each on offers a slight twist on the old mechanic.

Support keeps your streak going after you've died instead of resetting it. The only thing is all the rewards are beneficial for you team and not so much you. That said there are some damn fine rewards including a remote sentry and a care package drop that has an osprey helicopter to defend the area so those pesky enemies don't run up and get their hands on your glorious prizes. The best package is a booby-trapped airdrop crate that appears to enemies as a care package but when they go to steal it it blows up in their face and kills them. The jokey smurf exploding present aspect of the whole ordeal is not lost on me and is in fact quite hilarious. Hilarious untill you yourself fall for it a few dozen times... then it's just annoying.

The third strike package is called specialist and this is the most original of the three by far. Instead of unlocking air strikes or getting to man the guns of various bitchin' aircraft you unlock extra perks. It sounds a bit wankish to unlock an extra perk at two kill intervals but it could actually turn out to be just what you needed. If you have a hard time deciding on which perks to assign your created class this is your answer. At six kills you could be working with six perks instead of the, at one time adequate but now paultry, three. Of course this package is only optimal once you in the higher levels and actually have unlocked most of your kill streaks... I've never used it.

With the newly added theatre mode MW3 is finally up to date with that certain other FPS game. You can watch old matches you've been in and take screen shots and make little movies. Sure a certain other title had these capabilities 6 years ago but we're not talking about Halo 3 now are we. Even though with Halo 3 the online support and heat maps and award tracking is free instead of subscription based were still not talking about it.

I only have minimal dabbling in the theatre mode having made only one screen shot and one kill clip but i can already tell space is a problem. You have ten slots to save either your screen shots or you movies that you have cut yourself. The slots doesn't seem like it will be a problem for me because I can't see myself really caring too much about making cinematic opuses but for a person who gets right into it I could see how this would appear disastrous. I mean if you're getting right in there doing some matrix camera cuts on the kill shot and really get some good Bayhem then i would imagine your going to need about a thousand slots and not just ten. Which brings us back to the subscription based Elite service I image they'll give you more slots there... FOR A PRICE.

Now that I've spoken of mostly the icing I can tell you the cake is the same you've grown to love and or need. If you're like me and have developed a strong addiction to these games over the last six years you've got nothing in store but about a zillion hours of gameplay ahead of you. The levels are just a complex and awesome as you would expect. There's ones you'll hate and ones you'll love. Those likes and dislikes will change as you get better at the game. So far my favorite is the France map because it makes me feel classy to head shot some mother effers there. amongst the little cafe tables of cobblestone streets

One last thing the G36C is back which is the best news ever because it is far and away the best gun of MW1 and was missing in MW2. I had to settle for the Aug which i thought i loved but now that I have my baby back it was a shallow false love.

I finally finished Dead Island

Thursday, October 20, 2011

I finally finished Dead Island using the character Sam B. As you can tell, since the game came out roughly two months ago, it took me quite some time. 24h 46m 04s to be exact. Actually that's not quite exact since I died a billion and two times and I am almost convinced that your game clock doesn't ding you for the multitude of times you play for two minutes from your save just to get punched in the face and genitals by a grandma zombie and loose your pocket wad. (The game dings you a random amount of money every time you die.) Since there is no way to tell how much time I wasted falling of cliffs and getting brain punched by Thug zombies we will just go with the aforementioned amount of gorey hours.

After playing through the game I would recommend it to anyone who's got some time to burn and hankering for carving up some zombays as my co-op player Anthony Whittrock affectionately called them--right before I blew him up... A lot.

While I'm on it the co-op in this game is great for farting around, blowing up propane tanks to close to each other, driving off cliffs while your friends are in the passenger seat and once in a while even accomplishing some meaning full tasks. In fact the game is near impossible to finish without the help of another person wildly swinging weapons in your close proximity. Which conveniently is what I will blame the large chunk of my deaths because I was alone for most of my playthrough.

Don't get me wrong it's nobody's fault but my own since there is an endless amount of faceless zombie destroyers waiting to team up with you online. The drop in and out co-op makes this painless. I didn't want to use it, though, because I like to play games while I watch TV and find all manner of ways to get distracted and forget that some poor sod halfway across the world is getting angrier and angrier at me because I am in the kitchen burning a pizza and not going through a door that would progress the story line of the game. That said I also dislike the thought of loosing and precious treasures while I am afk.. or afcontroller more appropriately. I need my preciouses, all of them.

I am a giant loot hoor. I care about loot and I care about it a lot. This is another reason why Dead Island is fun to play--there's literally shit lying everywhere. Well not literally shit more like a vast array of weapons and ingredients tucked into every nook and cranny of the island. That's right I did say ingredients there and you can make your own weapons. You know what's cooler than slashing a zombie's arm off with a machete? Well when you cut it's arm off and then the zombie gets electrocuted, or poisoned, or starts on fire, that's what. Well in Dead Island you get to take ordinary weapons and then you bad ass em up a bit. You can wrap barbed wire around a sledgehammer, there's the classic nails in a baseball bat and even make poison bullets--somehow you can poison something that's dead. Don't ask just shoot because your gun doesn't get damaged like your melee weapons.

Going into Dead Island I thought the weapons getting damaged mechanic was going to be a game killer for me. After all I famously rage quit Fall Out 3 after my launch anything weapon broke after a mere hour of shooting flaming teddy bears. but I digress. It's true your weapons do get damaged at a speed which is highly unrealistic. Shouldn't your weapons suffer less damage since zombies are so soft and pulpy? More annoying though is you can't upgrade or modify a damaged weapon so you have to constantly repair your bent knifes and broken sticks. This would be a giant pain in the ass if the developers didn't graciously litter the landscape with workbenches, at which you can repair your wares for a nominal fee.

If you're like me and you can't help your self from rooting in every zombies pockets and bikini bottoms, then you'll have no shortage of cash flow to make it rain on your favorite baseball bat that you turned into a spiked morning star (yes it's gloriously true those exist in this game). There are also traders littered around every human base. So, if the corpse robbing you've been doing isn't up to snuff for your needs of tools of destruction, you can also sell your bent hammer that you don't feel like fixing again. You might as well sell your hammers since the blunt weapons don't progress as high in damage output as the sharper stabbier ones.

The fall of blunt weapons bothered me since I was playing with Sam B, the expert in blunt weaponry. Since I juiced his skill tree to favor blunt weapons I was sorely disappointing that I had to abandon them later on in the game and have a lot of wasted skill points. Oh yeah there's skill trees in this game now pick your jaw up off the floor and put your genitals back in your pants. I know it's pretty ridiculously awesome that this hack and slash has all the right parts of an RPG and not to much of the sleep inducing forever-long conversations. Knowing what I know now though about the skill trees I would highly recommend playing as Xian since she specializes in sharp weaponry.

The good thing about each character is that even though they have specialties they are still customizable because each character has three skill trees you can plunk a point into every level your character progresses. You can choose everything from lock picking to zombie head stomping. I would have said corpse there instead of overusing the word zombie but that would be misleading because there are human enemies you have to fight in this game and you cannot stomp on their heads when they become corpses, sadly.

That's right this game is not exempt from that annoying zombie premise that makes you have to fight humans because "we're the real monsters". Which is even lamer because aren't the zombies just resurrected dead us's anyway? As much as I hate this cliched turn of events you don't have to worry about it too much because any pea shooter you happen to be packin will pop the human eggshell heads in a single shot. If however you don't blast them in the face and choose rather to get in close to mele range you'll just die because they can take a severe beating. True to the annoying overused sub plot of humans vs humans it is you in these situations that is always the pulpy tender victim.

That should pretty much cover everything about this game besides the plot. I don't want to ruin it for you so I'll leave that out. You'll just have to find out for yourself. They say the real enjoyment is in the journey, which is even more enjoyable when your committing zombie genocide everywhere from a beach to a jungle to a prison.

#DeusEx is about to loose me if i have to do one more conversation tree before I get to shoot things again

of course I forgot #DeusEx is an RPG and of course that means I get lost in the world and can't figure out how to get to the next objective

I would really like to not be running around like a lost asshole right now #DeusEx

And now I'm in some random hoble because I went up a fire escape and climbed through a window. Found some ammo dealer... still lost #DeusEx

- MattyDorf @superdalebot a couple guys I work with have been talking about that game. Sounds like it's great, but hard.

@MattyDorf ugh tell me about it I've either been lost or talking for two hours I need to shoot something #DeusEx

As much as I love the slick design, I keep getting hung up on the wardrobe. It's like a NuMetal fan Raped 80's futuristic anime #DeusEx

Oh sweet i found the police station. Time for some hot action? NO ANOTHER CONVERSATION TREE. Oh joy non-consequential back story #DeusEx

- iamanth @superdalebot How far are you now?

@iamanth just got to the police station sooooo still the beginning

Oh nice you do an inventory search on a corpse and pull out his hacker brain chip. They called it a wet drive. Silly #DeusEx

- iamanth @superdalebot I'm just pass that. I haven't played since Thursday. Are you playing it on the 360 or on the PC?

@iamanth 360

@iamanth i havent shot anything in hours

- iamanth @superdalebot Taking the stealth route, huh? Did you save the hostages? I didn't... I feel so awful :(

I am not taking the stealth route just got lost and then too much talking. i did save the hostages I thought I had to #DeusEx

-iamanth @superdalebot I completely forgot about it. :( How did you get into the police station?

@iamanth that riveting conversation with the knob police officer who shot the kid when we were partners. I HATE the conversations #DeusEx

-iamanth @superdalebot Ah... I wasn't able to talk him into letting me in since I don't have that social augmentation. So I went in through the roof.

@iamanth I have no augmentations yet. Haven't figured that out. Roof would have been faster than talking #DeusEx

- iamanth @superdalebot I stacked crate after crate to get in over the fence lol

@iamanth haha Nice i never even thought about doing something like that

When do i get to kill something again. Snoooze #DeusEx

Sweet I didn't get lost enough in the street might as well head into the sewer I can't see this going badly #DeusEx

Of course there's electrified water in the sewer because if it wasn't i wouldn't die when i fell in #DeusEx

Finally in a gunfight. Made it about as far through gang territory as i could by stealth... 20ft #DeusEx

When it rains it pours with #DeusEx directly from one firefight into 4 more. This game has serious pacing issues

From talking for 2 hours to death 12 times in a row fighting mercs #DeusEx #RAGEQUIT

Live tweets from Deus Ex Pt:2

It's nice of the loading screen to have short synopsis that you can catch up on the story so far while you wait for the game to load #DeusEx

in the future paint cans are hexagon shaped cylinders #DeusEx

In #DeusEx as I play i am turning on all the taps throughout the levels A) because I can B) because I want to be a water bandit

Live tweets from Deus Ex

Saturday, August 27, 2011

I decided I would Live tweet my experience while playing Deus Ex. Here are those tweets.

So far deus ex is a goodlooking game but the combat is kind of annoying since your so weak you need to use cover from which shooting sucks

It's a good thing there's no ammo in this game since it takes about a full clip to hit a guy once

the terrible aim cover shooting is especially frustrating since as soon as you step out of cover your pretty much dead

MattyDorf @superdalebot my friend Brad just got that and said it was hard as hell

@MattyDorf yeah this game is lucky it looks so slick and I have beer because it's pretty damn frustrating

pretty cheeky of #DeusEx to not allow me to make the iron sights a LS click instead of left trigger

I'm live tweeting a game I rented on a friday night. You can pretty much extrapolate what type of person I am from that sentence #deusEx

- iamanth @superdalebot Or you just suck.. I'm getting headshots with the pistol... ;-p

@iamanth ha i don't even have the pistol yet. I'm at the very beginning #DeusEx

- MattDorf @superdalebot yeah he said that just when he got good at sneaking up on and killing people they threw robots at him and that was done.

@MattyDorf obviously I was premature with my redicule because I was just playing the prologue before the credits

When they decide to use CGI instead of in game graphics for the cutscenes with the yellow wash, that's when the magic happens #DeusEx

I get beaten and shot by bad guys. I get cyborg parts to help me live then I fight crime. I'mgoing to pretend I'm future robocop #DeusEx

The stealth moves are pretty sweet and the baraka sword arm lethal take downs are awesome but i really just want to run and gun #DeusEx

I wasted my time and money on Brink

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

I should have known it would be just alright. That's what Brink is, middle of the road, luke warm and all the various other terms that mean some good and some bad.

Sure the customization is good and I can pick the outfit I wanted for my character to wear but by the time I can get anything really interesting I'm already done the game. Sure I can play the game online to further unlock more shiny bobbles by grinding out experience but I really just don't want to. I can't bring myself to deal with the frustration of getting my ass kicked by fifteen year old cocky pricks like I'm playing a clunky cartoony shooter akin to Quake. And all just so I can finally get some pants that are badass.

If the game didn't have the shitty weaponry and terrible shot registry I would be more inclined to put some hours into it. More specifically what I mean by shitty shot registry is it seems, that even with the strongest weapons it is still annoyingly hard to kill the enemy. I find myself peppering bodies with a giant light machine gun and on the rare occasion when my bullets don't miss they seemed to have no effect. This ineffectiveness has me convinced that it doesn't matter which weapon I chose because I they all feel like nerf guns.

Further more Brink uses that god awful engine they made for Doom 3. Instead of feeling like a bad ass sniping soldier of carnage I am turned into a child who is trying to paint skinny bodies with my fingers. With out delving too much into my fanaticism about 3rd person shooter engines I'll just say that I like when my gun shoots where I aim it and not in a random pattern around where my cross-hairs lay.

When it comes to engine consideration all designer should realize the true reason that the Call of Duty series does so well: your gun shoots precise powerful bullets.

With the aforementioned shortcomings to the game-play you now understand why I would not want to spend time grinding in this game. I don't want to farm xp by playing through levels where the main frustration is the shit you're shooting at isn't dying.

The worst part of the non-delivery of this game is the promise and potential it has. The different classes and abilities to provide you team mates with buffs is a fresh a cool aspect to employ in an FPS. Picking from three different weight classes that have different weapon and mobility options can really split levels into different experiences. The heavy guys get the most weapons but the skinny guys can climb onto rooftops that no-one else can reach. The middle guys are a marriage of both aspects lessened respectively.

This could have save the game if, when you actually did get on the rooftop, you weren't using the crappy guns that aren't proficient at killing. The same goes for the heavy characters there's not much use taking a big machine gun and walking slow just so you can spray bullets all over you enemies if you actually are just missing and shooting the wall behind said enemy because your bullets are too inaccurate.

In the end Brink is all icing and not enough cake.

RIP poffo

"Macho Man" Randy Savage is dead. As one of the greatest wrestlers OF ALL TIME had a heart attack at the wheel of his jeep and crossed over a cement meridian and through on coming traffic to hit a tree more than just a legend was leaving us. A piece of my child hood went away with that man.

His real name was Randy Poffo and before he was the most electrifying man in sports entertainment he was a decorated baseball player. In the position of catcher went as far as getting signed to the St. Louis Cardinals.

With his many years in the WWE and WCW he won 20 titles. But by far his greatest accomplishment in life was playing Bonesaw in Spiderman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHU7NolJuZ8&feature=related.

Thank you Mr. Poffo you will immortalized in the grandest way possible... in my minecraft world
